You know, one of those moments I remember distinctly was watching the inauguration of Ronald Reagan in my 5th grade class. The entire school decided to stop for that moment so we could see the actual transition of power, and the events that surround it. I was just thinking about that, and I honestly wonder if schools will stop and take that same opportunity with the inauguration of Barack Obama. I hope that they do, not for the historical significance, and certainly not for any party affiliation, but simply because I’ve been stunned by the complete lack of education in history and civics people display. Taking politics out of it completely, doesn’t it seem obvious that January 20th would be a remarkable day if the schools used the Inauguration as a jumping off point to teach what government is, how it works, and why it’s different here than anywhere else?
