The End Of The Shitty Phone Era

Posted by admin On December - 31 - 2008

If you’ve read this blog over time, you know that one of the longer running jokes between my wife and I is over her Motorola v195 phone, which I believe she purchased from T Mobile on on the day God created the firmament. I’ve been gently ribbing her to upgrade her phone to something that doesn’t require string, the banging of two rocks, or morse code in order to communicate for about a year now.

Well, her phone is finally dying. It wont hold a charge, or a call anymore.

About three months ago, we went looking at the available phones, and discussed what Kim wants in a phone. Kim had a couple of things that a phone MUST have. One is battery life, and the other was that it HAD to be a flip phone. She’s afraid of breaking a candybar phone, and she despises sliders. I wanted her to have a smartphone, which up until October, made a flip phone impossible.

We finally found a compromise, and Kim will be getting her new phone on Monday. She’s getting a Blackberry Pearl Flip. Red, of course. I’m going to have barrels of fun setting it up for her, and showing her how to use a Blackberry. She’s like….mmmkay. I’m fairly sure once she actually gets to using it, she’ll be all about it.

Of course, the shitty phone jokes won’t stop, they’ll just now have to be made about MY phone, which was made on the 6th Day, comparatively.

T-Mobile Adds 3G-Less Javelin?

Posted by admin On December - 24 - 2008

blackberry-javelinIf you’re jonesing for a Blackberry, there’s the Bold that everybody wants, and then there’s the Storm–a phone that seems to fill the gap of self hating iPhone lovers that don’t want to jump to the Death Star that is AT&T.   T-Mobile has Pearls and Curves, and the new Flip phone that Smartphone Noobs will buy.

I say this in the interest of full disclosure: My wife wants a Flip, and the above sentence will guarantee that I won’t get laid.

Now, comes the Curve 8900, for T-Mobile.  Boy Genius reports that rumors abound about an official release of the 8900 on February 18.  It’s everything a Bold is, except it’s EDGE.  No 3G for you.

As far as T-Mobile goes, which–let’s face it–gets everyone else’s table leavings, it’s a nice phone to have in their stable.  It’s far and away ahead of it’s replacement, with a 512 MHz processor, and 192 MB of RAM.  It’s going to have WiFi on board, so you’ll be able to hit the HotSpots, or anywhere you can grab a connection.

With T-Mo’s up and coming 3G network being turned on here and there, you would think that the push would be for new phones with 3G on board.  Not so much.  Add to the fact that T-Mo isn’t very forthcoming about new phones and features, This may be the best they have right now aside from the G1 when it comes to Smartphones.

Well, that and the Flip, which I understand is JUST FABULOUS.  Right, Hon?  Kimmers?  Hello?
